I love working with successful people. They inspire me with their passion and results. As they say, success breeds success.
But success also breeds something else. Mistakes.
As an Executive Coach I often say that I help successful people become AMAZING! That’s my passion.
But in reality, most successful people won’t become amazing. Oh, they will enjoy their success, but only to a self-imposed limit.
It’s not just unsuccessful people that make mistakes. In fact, the more successful you are the more prone you are to making the following mistakes.
Mistake #1 – I already know all that I need to know.
I spend several hours each week calling on prospective clients. These are highly successful people already. Yet, most of them make this mistake. They think they already know everything there is to know.
In fact, some of them are quite arrogant. Others are aloof and have a closed mind.
On the other hand, Amazing People are continuous learners and have a voracious appetite for professional growth and mastery.
Assignment: Ask a few close friends who will tell you the truth this question – Do I ever come across as a know it all?
Mistake #2 – I don’t see how anyone can help me.
Many successful people think they’ve arrived at the top of their field all by themselves. I believe that if we dig into their success we’d see that they had the support of others along the way.
As they say,
Even the Lone Ranger had Tonto.
Continued success will require the help of others….period.
Why is it that in sports we are not surprised that the best of the best have one or more coaches, mentors, or advisors? Yet in business, we often think we don’t any help getting to the next level.
Mistake #3 – I’m too busy.
Most successful people are busy. In fact, if we measured success by how busy we are, we Americans would win the prize of the most successful people in the world. Read that, we are the busiest people in the world.
We are addicted to constantly going and doing. We love to check the box and get stuff done.
It’s true that slothfulness doesn’t lead to success. But, are you really living the life of your dreams? Are you really fulfilled, happy, and content? Or, are you just busy.
I know a lot of successful people who don’t have a life. They have a job that brings in tons of money, but they are miserable on the inside. They put on a good face, but in reality something’s missing.
The only ones who win the rat race are the rats.
When I talk to a successful professional who conveys to me these ideas:
- I already know all that I need to know
- I don’t see how you can help me
- I’m too busy
….I know this person will never become a coaching client. Nor will they ever become AMAZING! And….that’s a shame.
Being successful doesn’t mean you won’t make these mistakes. But to become AMAZING, you’ll need to move past them.
