Make sure your goals are written in a way that’s easy to read and remember—for example, avoid writing them in all caps or putting all of them in one line (it looks messy).
Here’s what my goal list looks like:
- Drink 6 glasses of water every day
- Exercise 2 hours per week
- Read 3 chapters of a book daily
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator for two days in a row
Put Your Weekly Goals In Order Of Priority.
Do you know what’s great? When you have a set of goals, and you know that if you follow through on them, they’ll make your life better. Do you know what’s even better? When those goals are prioritized in order of importance.
You might think that your long-term goal of being CEO is more important than the short-term goal of getting promoted at work, but if there’s no way to measure whether or not that promotion will come any closer to making it happen, then it’s just an abstract dream.
And while dreams are good for keeping us motivated (and sometimes inspiring us), they don’t always help us achieve our aspirations any faster. So how do we turn our dreams into something measurable and attainable?
By creating SMART goals! SMART stands for: Specific / Measurable / Attainable / Realistic / Time Bound

This can be as simple as scheduling an hour in the morning to work on your top task for the week. Set aside one day each weekend to work on a special project or task that needs extra attention.
Or maybe you’ll want to schedule a meeting with yourself once per week to plan out your next three months of goals and action steps. This is totally up to you!
Once you have identified your top goal and determined when you will complete it, input those details into your calendar so they pop up automatically every Monday morning.
If there are many projects or tasks that need completion before this date then create sub-tasks within the larger project by adding smaller chunks of time throughout the week where they need to be completed.
Schedule All Your Goals And Entry Points Into Your Calendar.
One of the most basic and effective ways to stay productive is by scheduling your goals and entry points into your calendar. Your calendar is a tool that helps you remember, plan, track progress, celebrate and reflect on what needs to be done.
When planning out your week, give each task or goal a specific time slot in which it needs to be accomplished. This way, you are giving yourself a clear structure for how much time you want for each thing throughout the day or week.
Check Off All Tasks As You Complete Them.
To stay on task, you need to keep yourself accountable.
The best way to do this is by using a planner or calendar. You can either buy one at a local store or use an app on your phone. If you choose to go with an app, make sure it allows for:
- Scheduling tasks in advance
- Setting priorities and goals for each day (and week)
- Scheduling time-off so that you have time off from work (or school), but also remember the importance of having fun! It’s important not to get so caught up in work that we forget what life is all about.

If you’re a person who appreciates reward and recognition, celebrate your success by going out to dinner with friends or buying yourself something nice! Then start on a new weekly plan. Reward yourself for making progress in other areas of your life, too.
For example, if you’ve been taking good care of the environment lately, reward yourself by going on an extra long bike ride this weekend. If you’ve been being kinder to others in general lately (like sending thoughtful notes), reward yourself with a manicure.
If you’re working hard at school or work and getting good grades or promotions, as a result, find time to relax with some TV!
It’s important that we treat ourselves well when we do something well—it’s not selfish; it just helps us stay motivated throughout the day. You deserve it!
